Cooling Down Campus - University of Maryland Heat Response Plan

Project Description:

As climate change becomes more relevant, heat related emergencies threaten University of Maryland (UMD) personnel. Our objective is to create two matrices to enable UMD decision makers to better identify hazardous scenarios and ensure the safety of UMD personnel in such situations. The first matrix identifies outdoor heat index thresholds and recommends safety protocol for UMD demographics. The second matrix identifies indoor temperature thresholds and similarly recommends safety protocol. Additionally, we took the initiative to create heat relief packages for relevant UMD campus personnel to distribute in order to mitigate the health effects due to heat stress on campus.
