Project Description:
With the rise in automated driving technology, more specifically advanced driver assistance systems, comes the necessity for safe and reliable road infrastructure. This project’s goal is to determine the condition of various roadway infrastructure elements such as quality and visibility of lane markings, wall and barrier conditions, signage, and any other elements in terms of safety and infrastructure that are critical for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) functionality. The data collected throughout this report was processed and analyzed by the artificial intelligence software, YOLO V8. By using dashcam footage, we were able to create videos displaying potential issues that the software flagged. This report not only identifies the effect of vehicles on lane markings over time and weather factors, but also includes recommendations for future improvements to ensure that Maryland roads can fully support ADAS features, smart cars, and technological advancements. It focuses specifically on I-95, I-270, Route 1, and Kenilworth Ave. (College Park) for the roads and freeways where AI will analyze their conditions.
