Evaluating Infrastructure in Prince George's County for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

CEE Team 1-23 project image

Project Description:

Good quality road markings are essential for self-driving vehicles to be fully implemented into traffic. It's difficult with constant construction and erosion due to vehicles and weather to consistently have sufficient road conditions for these self driving vehicles. We approached this by creating a rating system to determine the quality of Prince George's County roads, including interstate roads, intrastate roads, and local streets. We did this by capturing video footage of the roads driven, and utilizing YOLOv8 AI-technology for analysis to gauge how many road markings were identified as faded by the software. With this information, we can compare it to the current ratings that the Maryland Department of Transportation has recorded to estimate how far we truly are from living in a fully autonomous world.
