Evaluating Algal Biochar as a Supplementary Cementitious Material

Project Description:

We will evaluate the ability of pyrolysized algae harvested from Green Mechanics' Algal Turf Scrubber to serve as a supplementary cementitious material in concrete specimens. By evaluating compressive strength and carbon dioxide sequestration abilities of our specimens with varying biochar concentrations in their mixes, we will be able to identify an optimal percent of biochar to use in a concrete mix so as to have high strength and sustainable characteristics.

We hope to improve the sustainability of concrete through our investigation of algal biochar in concrete specimens.
