Project Description:
In 2022, University Boulevard (MD 193) in Langley Park was ranked one of the deadliest roads for pedestrians in the United States. The lack of clear guidance for pedestrians and vehicles, frequent jaywalking, and inadequate crossing infrastructure of this roadway poses significant safety threats for pedestrians. In addition, the ongoing Purple Line Construction along the roadway exacerbates safety concerns by creating unpredictable pedestrian routes, unmarked crossing paths, and increased vehicular congestion. Our roadway redesign creates a safer, more efficient public right of way between New Hampshire Avenue (MD 650) and Riggs Road (MD 212), improving pedestrian safety while considering the future alignment of the Purple Line metrorail. With the anticipated completion of Purple Line improvements in 2027, the team developed a redesign that implements both transitional and permanent upgrades which increase the roadway Pedestrian Level-of-Service score by over 30%.
