Project Description:
Project Scope Definition
Building Use: Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is a commercial airport with hundreds of arriving and departing flights every day. The airport serves over 27 million passengers daily.
Design Intent: To design a combination of fire protection systems and features for the new A/B terminal connection at BWI Marshall Airport that will minimize the total cost of losses due to fire, including both indirect and direct losses. The design should protect the building’s occupants while allowing for the building to continue its function as an airport.
Project Constraints: BWI Marshall requests that occupant evacuation be limited to the landside of the airport. The airside of the airport does not lead to the public way and may not be safe for occupants due to routine airport operations. In addition, the airside has significant fuel storage, which has the potential to lead to fuel spills. BWI Marshall has also requested that egress not proceed backward through the security checkpoints, as the egress capacity is limited through these exits and does not comply with the 50% capacity main exit requirement for assembly spaces. This also disrupts the airport’s mission continuity by requiring travelers to travel back through security checkpoints, causing significant operational delays.
