C2- Conceptual Redesign of the Heritage Community Courtyard

Project Description:

The Heritage Community Courtyard Redesign by Sitedev2 transforms one of UMD North Campus’ busiest outdoor spaces from a simple pass-through into a vibrant, multi-use gathering destination. Guided by student feedback via surveying and site analysis, the design addresses concerns such as limited bike storage, frequent flooding, lack of study space, and underwhelming aesthetics. The project proposes to reduce impervious surfaces through the use of permeable pavement to improve drainage, increase green gathering space with additional workspace seating, enhance nighttime lighting for safety, and expand micromobility infrastructure. Art installations created by students of color will celebrate the cultural mission of the Heritage community. By emphasizing community engagement, the team hopes to breathe new life into the redesigned courtyard that will enhance daily student life.
