Project Description:
Plastic waste is a global threat, only exacerbated in dense urban areas such as Kampala, Uganda. Without centralized recycling within Kampala, most of their plastic becomes waste after a single use and is not collected for value chain activities. This uncollected waste can quickly turn into a catastrophe. As witnessed on August 9, 2024, a landfill landslide led to the tragic death of at least 25 lives. Unfortunately, this abundance of plastic waste is not the only strain Kampala’s community faces; it is also a housing deficiency due to costly building materials and services that are becoming less affordable for many. Kubik, a company that has developed the technology capable of turning plastic waste into building materials, opens doors of opportunity to solve both of these obstacles in Kampala simultaneously. Our project aimed to establish Kubik’s viability within Kampala and worked toward evaluating a potential manufacturing facility, collection strategies, and valuable projections for this possible implementation. Additionally, the project strives to provide a strong foundation for the Impact Africa Services International team to work towards further developing this project. The team hopes that our involvement can help relieve any additional burdens when determining if a partnership of this nature would effectively alleviate the stress that plastic waste and the housing deficiency place on Kampala. It is of utmost importance that the lifecycle of a plastic item does not end after one use, but instead becomes the start of another.
