Recirculating Bioreactor Garden: Created to treat sewage leaving a septic tank to remove nutrients and other pollutants.

Completed Bioreactor Garden

Project Description:

This project's goal was to improve the original bioreactor garden design created by Ridge to Reefs by making it more efficient in nutrient removal and decrease the overall footprint of the system. Our team used biochar to test the nutrient and pollutant removal capabilities compared to sand from the original design. In doing so this significantly decreased the systems weight. We divided the system into two separate sections and implemented recirculation in hopes that routing the influent through two treatment passes would further boost removal performance and support downsizing the overall size of the system.
