Project Description:

Located in Jinja, Uganda, Jinja Regional Referral Hospital (JRRH) serves the central-eastern region of the country. Due to overcrowding, mothers who have newborns admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) must wait outside for days on end with little shade, shelter, or basic amenities. Additionally, the hospital NICU is also running out of space and equipment to serve a growing influx of preterm babies born both at JRRH and outside.

JRRH has tasked not-for-profit organization Pathways to Hope Africa (PTHA) and our team -- UShelter1 -- with designing a maternal shelter which can comfortably and securely serve a minimum of a hundred mothers, as well as an attached NICU space to augment current hospital services. By generating a community-informed concept design, we hope to improve maternal healthcare within the region.
