Pedestrian Redesign of University Boulevard

Project Description:

In 2022, Robert J Schneider and a group of researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee conducted a study of fatal pedestrian crashes in the United States. Among the top 10, a stretch of University Boulevard (Maryland Route 193) in the neighboring town of Langley Park was identified as one of the deadliest roads for pedestrians. The primary goal of this project is to overall improve pedestrian safety along University Boulevard (Maryland Route 193) between New Hampshire Avenue (Maryland Route 650) and Riggs Road (Maryland Route 212). Our team outlines a recommended design and plan of action to do so with a focus on maximizing the safety of pedestrians while maintaining road efficiency. The proposed design considers the current roadway conditions and guidelines, the surrounding built environment (including nearby properties and establishments), as well as historical data/studies.
